Saudi Arabia Embraces a New Cinematic Era at the 11th Film Festival

11th Saudi Film Festival

The 11th Saudi Film Festival unfolded from April 17 to 24, 2025, at the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) in Dhahran, marking a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s cinematic journey. Organized by the Cinema Association in collaboration with Ithra and supported by the Film Commission of the Ministry of Culture, this year’s festival embraced the theme “Cinema of Identity,” delving into how films reflect and shape individual, national, and cultural identities.

Exploring Identity Through Film

The festival’s central theme, “Cinema of Identity,” invited filmmakers and audiences to explore narratives that examine the complexities of identity in a globalized world. The selected films, both local and international, navigated topics such as heritage, urban life, and personal experiences, highlighting the challenges and transformations that individuals and societies undergo in response to these influences.

Honoring a Saudi Cinema Icon

A highlight of the festival was the tribute to Ibrahim Al-Hasawi, one of Saudi Arabia’s most renowned actors, whose legacy spans over three decades. Al-Hasawi has been an influential figure in Saudi entertainment, contributing to numerous theatrical productions, TV shows like “Tash Ma Tash” and “Bayni Wa Baynak,” and films such as “Hajjan,” “Zero Distance,” and the recent “Hobal.” The festival celebrated his immense contributions to the arts and his significant role in shaping Saudi cinema.

 Spotlight on Japanese Cinema

In addition to the focus on Saudi cinema, the 11th Saudi Film Festival featured a special program dedicated to Japanese cinema, marking 70 years of Saudi-Japan relations. This segment showcased a selection of independent Japanese films, offering audiences a chance to experience Japan’s unique cinematic traditions and cultural identity. The Japanese program further enhanced the festival’s mission to foster cross-cultural dialogue and broaden the perspectives of Saudi audiences.

Engaging Industry and Audience

The festival offered a comprehensive program beyond film screenings, including panel discussions with industry experts, masterclasses conducted by seasoned filmmakers, and one-on-one meetings with experts for personalized feedback and advice on projects. Private pitching sessions provided filmmakers the opportunity to present their ideas to potential investors and distributors. Additionally, book signings allowed audiences to meet authors and filmmakers who contributed to the festival, deepening their understanding of the creative processes behind the films.

 Production Market and International Collaborations

A key component of the festival was its production market, which showcased 22 booths from various production entities, providing filmmakers with a platform to develop and present their work and to network. The festival also featured a curated selection of 12 short films from the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. The inclusion of Japanese cinema, with eight Japanese films and expert discussions, highlighted the festival’s commitment to international collaboration and cultural exchange.

 Accessibility and Inclusivity

To accommodate a diverse audience, the festival introduced different passes, allowing attendees to tailor their experience. These passes could be purchased online through the Ithra website. For those unable to attend in person, parts of the film festival were streamed online, ensuring broader accessibility.

 Conclusion

The 11th Saudi Film Festival at Ithra was a testament to the Kingdom’s growing cinematic landscape, celebrating local talent while fostering international exchange. By embracing the theme of identity, the festival provided a platform for powerful storytelling that resonates with audiences worldwide, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to cultural development and artistic expression.
